I’ve been thinking about your sock issue (with the tweed BFL socks coming out too big). I wonder if it’s because that base is thinner than Lisa’s SW merino/nylon base, at 438 yds./100 g rather than the usual 400 yds./100 g. If the yarn is thinner, than the stitches would be looser on your usual needles, so it would make sense that the fabric would be more flimsy as a result.
So many things hit home!
I would think the BFL might be a bit slipperier than some of the other yarns like the Patons you (and I now) use so much. Especially with slippery needles, you would get a looser gauge. But Sarah might also be on to another aspect, it’s probably a bit thinner
I’ve been making bulky yarn, on the rustic side, for Hats for Sailors. I’ve been using size 9 and 10.5. Then I switched to some nice Cascade 128, merino wool, and it is so slippery! I am making your Sagamore Flyover hat, and it is turning out so different than the sticky stockinette hats I have been making.
I was suprised to see the Sagamore calls for size 7 and 9 needles after I was using ones so much bigger. I’ll have to look at the test knits and the types of yarn.
I have also bought a few skeins of dk (maybe sport weight) that I can’t wait to try as well. They are patterned yarns, so I will just my standard toe-up stockinette socks, but will reduce the stitch count as necessary.
Thanks for all the awesome podcasts!
